Global Advocacy, Leadership & Speaking Engagements

Dr. Unati Makiwane is a physician and global speaker committed to advancing health, human dignity, social equity, and meaningful global dialogue. Through her international engagements, she contributes to conversations addressing critical challenges affecting communities, particularly the well-being and empowerment of women and young people.

In January 2026, Dr. Makiwane was a speaker at the Youth Global Forum, organized by the Centre for Global Dialogue and Leadership (CGDL) in Madrid, Spain. She engaged in discussions on geopolitics, global economic challenges, youth unemployment, equitable representation in leadership and policy making, and the responsible and ethical implementation of artificial intelligence. She also explored the global youth mental health crisis, highlighting the importance of awareness, advocacy, and sustainable approaches to improving mental well-being.

In September 2026, Dr. Makiwane participated in the Youth Empowerment Forum, organized by CGDL in Geneva, Switzerland. Her engagement included visits to the World Trade Organization and the International Labour Office, alongside discussions on international labour relations and legislation, global economies, international trade, and public policies.

These international experiences reflect Dr. Makiwane’s commitment to advancing inclusive leadership, strengthening global perspectives, and championing solutions to interconnected health and societal challenges.

As the founder and driving force behind Black Birth Revolution, she brings this broader vision to the movement’s mission of advancing Black maternal health, promoting birth equity, restoring dignity, and empowering women and communities through education, advocacy, and transformative conversations.

Her work is grounded in a fundamental belief: that every woman deserves to be heard, respected, and supported, and that healthier communities begin with dignity, equitable care, and the power to shape their own futures.

In May 2020, Dr. Makiwane participated in a virtual African Renaissance dialogue alongside former African Union Ambassador Dr. Arikana Chihombori-Quao, Dr. Kassa Kebede Tsegaye, the late Professor Runoko Rashidi, and Professor Richard Chinomona. The discussion explored Africa’s renaissance, its evolving global role, and the future of the continent.

In November 2020, she was a featured speaker at an African Business Conference, sharing the platform with Dr. Aberra Molla, recognized for his pioneering work in developing the Ethiopian alphabet.

In June 2021, Dr. Makiwane collaborated with the Federation of International Gender and Human Rights, a United Nations-affiliated organization, in support of initiatives advancing gender equity and human rights advocacy.
